I’m Allergic to My World
“I don’t think people really understand,” said Ben, who’s allergic to peanuts, tree nuts and sesame. “You’re living in almost constant fear.”
“People don’t realize how many things have nuts in them,” said Allegra, who’s allergic to all kinds of nuts.
On Sunday, September 27th, you’ll meet Ben, Allegra and other kids with allergies on the latest edition of “Nick News with Linda Ellerbee.”
The show is called “I’m Allergic to My World.”
“An allergy is basically when your body overreacts to something that should be safe,” said Dr. Robert Wood, an allergy expert at the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center in Baltimore, Maryland.
Experts say more and more kids suffer from allergies these days.
But no one knows exactly why.
In the meantime, kids with allergies and their parents have to come up with strategies to avoid dangerous situations.
And sometimes, that’s hard for a kid to deal with.
“When I was little, they had a ‘peanut-free’ table (at school),” Nick said, “which I don’t really like at all … I think of it as kind of segregating people with food allergies.”
“Sometimes it makes me angry that other kids can just … eat whatever they want,” Allegra said.
Then there’s Ben, who has even more allergies – not just peanuts, but dairy, wheat, eggs, rye, barley and beans, too.
And it’s not just food that kids are allergic to.
Some kids are allergic to common things in and around your house as well.
You’ll meet Doug, who’s allergic to bee stings, and Justin, whose home has to be dust-free just so he can breathe.
How do Nick, Allegra, Ben, Doug and Justin live free of fear in a world where allergies might lurk around every corner?
Find out on Sunday nght, September 27th, at 8 o’clock Eastern time, on “Nick News with Linda Ellerbee; I’m Allergic to My World.”
(If you live in a different time zone, be sure to check your local TV listings for the time you can watch the show in your community.)
